Scripture Memory

Memorizing Scripture is key to overcoming the power of sin. In Ephesians 6 the only weapon Paul presents us is the “Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.” Many Christians live their lives defenseless. Most of us experience 3 roadblocks that often stop us from memorizing Scripture.

First, we face a heart issue. Until we face our need for God and the power of His Word we will never truly be able to wield the Sword of the Spirit as God intends us to. We need to see our desperate dependence upon God and the arsenal He has given us or we will stay weak. Pray that God gives you new eyes and a heart that is ready to do battle against sin.

Second, we often face a mind issue. We often struggle to wrap our minds around what the passage means. Thankfully, God promises us that He will give us understanding in James 1:5. We overcome this mind issue by praying and asking God to open our eyes. We also need to meditate on Scripture like the blessed man in Psalm 1. The more we immerse our minds in Scripture the more the pieces begin to come together.

Third, we also face a work issue. For most of us studying the Bible and memorizing is hard work. Like most things in life, Scripture memory comes down to choosing to do hard work. Anyone can memorize—IF they put they put their heart and mind to it and decide to do the work.

Will you make the commitment and join others in taking up the Sword of the Spirit? NLBC has set out on an ambitious goal of learning 40 key Bible passages as a congregation over 3 1/2 years. Would you consider joining us? It is not going to be easy, but few things of value ever are. Will you accept the challenge?

To help us memorize and retain these verses CDs are available that have all 40 of our passages set to song! What a great way to memorize Scripture. CDs are available at cost and can be purchased at the guest table or church office (You can also purchase them directly via this link). We also are encouraging parents to help their children learn and memorize a set of Foundation Memory Verses. Flashcards are available for purchase and you’re welcome to pick up a free music CD containing 12 of the verses. For more resources on memorizing Scripture, including info on an iPhone and Android app, visit FighterVerses.com.

If you have any further questions or if we can help you in any way as you memorize Scripture please let us know. We’re excited to see how God uses His Word in His congregation.
