An Overview of the Gospel

A—We all must admit we’re sinners separated from God.

•  We’ve all sinned

—Romans 6:23—“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

•  Sin brings death (separation)

—Romans 6:23—“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

B—Hope only comes in believing/trusting in God’s gift.

•  God has a gift

—Romans 6:23—“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

•  God’s gift is Jesus

—John 3:16—“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

—John 14:6—“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

—1 John 5:11-13—“And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”

•  God’s gift is accepted by turning (repenting) from our sin and turning to Jesus

—Romans 10:9-10—“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”

•  We can only turn to Jesus by faith

—Ephesians 2:8—“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,”

C—We express our faith by crying out to Jesus for forgiveness.

•  Ask God to forgive your sins

—Romans 10:13—“For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

•  Trust God to do what He has promised to do

—1 John 5:11-13—“And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”

—John 20:31—“but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

—1 John 1:9-10—“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
